Why Bible-Centred Children’s Ministry?

Right from the beginning in creation, God speaks and the universe and everything in it, comes into existence. Through Abraham, Moses and the Prophets (His chosen messengers), God communicates His message to all. Ultimately through His only Son, He shows us and speaks to us of His supreme, perfect love for us and His desire that we should, “Repent and turn to Him, so that our sins may be wiped out.” (Acts 3v19)

Jesus Himself spoke the words of God as recorded in scripture (the Old Testament), and confirmed that the Old Testament pointed to Him. Jesus was Bible-Centred in His Ministry. His death and resurrection is the single saving event which all the saving events of the Old Testament point towards. At the end of Matthews Gospel, Jesus Commissions His followers to, “go and make disciples of all nations . . . . . . . . and teach them to obey everything I have commanded you.” (Matthew 28v19-20) In effect He is saying, ‘Follow my example, be focused on me and be Bible-Centred in your teaching’ . . . . . that means the Old and New Testament. Then Jesus appears to Saul (whose name is changed by Him to Paul), and he is commissioned to preach the good news to the gentiles (those who are not Jewish), so he also needs to be Jesus focused and Bible-Centred. Therefore, Paul’s letters are included in the Bible as scripture too.

So following the example of Jesus Himself, His disciples and Paul, at the heart of Children’s Ministry for us must be the Bible. We need to be Bible-Centred, if we want our children to know this living creator God, and we need to know and teach the Bible, if we want our children to know the salvation that God has won for them in Jesus Christ.

The bible doesn’t tell us everything there is to know about the world or life, there is much in the world which it doesn’t touch upon. But it does give us everything we need to know to be saved, to live as God’s children and to keep growing in godliness through our knowledge of Jesus (2 Peter 1v3).

As a children’s worker, through Primary Focus, I believe in and work to this same foundation of being Bible-Centred in my Ministry.
